The mosque was ordered to be built by Sultan Abdulhamid II. in 1880 over a tall rock on the Cape Yon peninsula. It has a traditional joint roof, square plan and single minaret. Its noteworthy feature is its location. The mosque is 50 meters above sea level and although it is narrow, it features a wonderful view on its terrace facing Mekka. Nowadays, this view has a new feature: the Selim I. Bridge.
